Preparation

Read more about the main steps we took when planning our archaeology investigation as part of the Petersfield Big Dig:

  1. Identifying areas of interest.

  2. Research of archaeology reports and old maps.

  3. Photos and LIDAR.

  4. Site visits and geophysics.

A lot of work and research has to go into preparing for a dig. Here we describe the steps we take.

Our project team, consisting of members of Liss Archaeology and the Petersfield Area Historical Society, first meets to discuss each of the possible areas in the town that might have undiscovered archaeology. Some of these are on land owned by the Town Council whilst other sites such as gardens are owned by companies or individuals. Having identified such areas, we divide up the work. Some of the team ask for landowners' permission to explore, whilst others start researching the sites.
